The living corals are easily recognized by external morphology and growth forms. Therefore, we use them to classify them to the two main groups: The first, Hexacorallia (Stony corals) who have a calcareous skeleton, deposited by their extrnal tissue, and forms a solid basis, upon which the living polyps rest. Most of these corals sometimes form huge colonies with many hundreds of polyps. After the corals death, the remaining calcareous skeletons become the mainframe of the coral reef (in scientific terminology they are called Hermatypic i.e. reef-builders). The name Hexacorallia stems from their six-radii symmetry of their body and skeleton parts, i.e. tentacles, polyp septa etc. are multiples of six.
To the Hexacorallia belong also the sea-anemones, and flexible corals such as Antipatharia and Zoantharia.
The second group, Octocorallia is easily differentiated by the (always) eight tentacles of the polyps. They include the soft corals, whose skeletons consists of calcareous needles (sclerites) embedded inside the animals inner tissue (Mesogloea); gorgonians, flexible skelton consist of a inner flaxible core made of plastic-like Gorgonin, and some skelton-less feather corals. The scientific term ahermatypic (non-reef builder) is applied to them.

הראשונה, אלמוגי אבן – אלמוגים שלהם שלד גירני קשיח, המושקע על ידי רקמתם החיצונית, ומהווה מעין בסיס מוצק שעל פניו יושב הפוליפ החי. רוב מיני האלמוגים נוטים ליצור מושבות של פוליפים רבים, עד אלפים במושבות ענק. במותם מתלכדים שלדי האלמוגים ויוצרים את מירקם האבן של השונית. מסיבה זאת נקראים אלמוגים אלה הרמטיפים, כלומר בוני שונית. אלמוגי האבן, יחד עם שושנות הים וקבוצה של אלמוגים גמישים הקרויה אוכמנאים, מהווים את תת-מחלקת ששאים. קבוצה שנייה הם האלמוגים הרכים – אלמוגים, שחוץ מסוג אחד (עוגבן), שלדם רופס ומורכב ממחטי גיר הטבועות ברקמות הפנימיות (הקרוי מזוגליאה), שקשיחות האלמוג תלויה לא אחת בצפיפותם בגוף האלמוג. הם מהווים קבוצה ניגודית לששאים, הקרויה שמונאים. קבוצה זו כוללת כמה סדרות שלעתים מייצגות צורות שונות ומיוחדות: ריפיונאים, גורגונאים ונוצות-ים – ככלל, מוגדרים אלמוגי קבוצה זאת כ-אהרמטיפים , כלומר שאינם בוני שונית
